Design & Build Quality
On the design, Samsung focused more on Eco-friendliness. They used more recycled materials which is their own way of promoting Eco-friendly products.
The external panels are made of strong Gorilla Glass Victus, and the device in general is also thinner than the predecessor which is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. This slimmer design made the whole device more comfortable to use and of course, less heavier than the previous model.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 also comes with an IPX8 protection for water resistance. It is certified by the IEC standard, and you can submerge this device into a water depth of 1.5 meters for about 30 minutes without any issue.
One of the most interesting things Samsung introduced to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a new hinge. The new hinge now allows the device to fold flat without any gap, unlike in the predecessor where there is a gap that doesn’t look appealing.
Display
There was no noticeable change on the display, everything was just the same as the previous model.
When the Z Fold 5 is folded, you can use the cover screen, which is very similar to the Z Fold 4 outer panel. It’s a 6.2-inch OLED screen that’s a bit taller and narrower.
The main inner screen is also much like the previous version. It’s a 7.6-inch foldable OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung says it’s brighter now, and our testing showed it can reach almost 800 nits at its brightest setting, which can go up to 1100 nits when it adjusts automatically. This is a bit better than the Z Fold 4’s screen brightness.
S-Pen, Audio, Biometrics
The Z Fold 5 still works with a stylus, and it has some special apps that work just with it. There is still no special housing for the stylus on the device but there’s a new case you can buy that holds the stylus. This case doesn’t make the phone much thicker.
The stylus itself is also thinner and smaller this time. Just so you know, you can only use the stylus on the big foldable screen inside the phone, not on the smaller cover screen when it’s folded.
The Z Fold 5 comes with two speakers for audio that are louder and better than last year’s model. They score well on our tests and offer great quality with some bass, clear vocals, and strong high notes. For security, the Z Fold 5 has a fingerprint scanner on the side that’s fast and reliable.
Software & UI
The interface of the Z Fold 5 is Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 running on Android 13. Samsung promised software updates for up to 5 years.
When it comes to multitasking, the Z Fold 5 does it like no other device. It’s quite easy to drag and drop app icons to split-screen mode, with up to three apps running at once. You can also have apps open within floating windows, and you can minimize these floating apps into a bubble on the side of the screen to be hidden yet accessible.
Processor & Performance
Just like I said earlier, one of the big improvements in the Z Fold 5 is its design and the chipset. The Z Fold 5 sports the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset for Galaxy.
This is the best chip you can get in Android phones right now, it is the same Chipset in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the other S23 models. The performance of the Z Fold 5 is better than the Z Fold 4.
Battery Life & Charging
The Z Fold 5 has the same battery capacity just like the previous model, which is 4,400mAh. Even though it has a new chipset, the battery life is almost the same.
The Galaxy Z45 supports up to 25-watt wired charging, there is also support for 15W of wireless charging but there is no charger in the box. I don’t know the reason why Samsung does not include chargers in their flagship devices, but I think they know better.
Camera Specs
The Z Fold 5 comes with the same cameras as the Z Fold 4. It has a main camera with 50 megapixels, a 3x telephoto camera with 10 megapixels, and an ultra-wide camera with 12 megapixels. The main camera usually takes 12-megapixel pictures, which look nice.
The photos have clear details and sharpness, and plants look natural without being overly sharp. The colors are bright, like what Samsung usually does, and there’s a good balance between light and dark areas.
When you take pictures in portrait mode, they turn out great. The subjects are detailed and colorful, and there’s a nice separation between the subject and the background. The background also has a convincing blur effect.
Verdict
Aside from the new chipset with excellent performance, and the new hinge design which allows this device to fold flat without any gap, I don’t think there is any other major upgrade.
If you have the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 but just want to get this as an upgrade, there is no problem because you are going to enjoy even better performance. Let me know in the comment section if you will be buying this device.
