Tecno Camon 20 Premier Overview

Tecno is one of the very few manufacturers that are not afraid to try new things year in and year out, especially with their Camon series. It’s quite evident when you look at the previous Camon 19 Pro and even the 18 Premier and realize they don’t actually look like predecessors of the series.

Most manufacturers build on existing hardware and make a few changes here and there but Tecno is not afraid to bring an entirely new design. But we’re not here to discuss manufacturing processes, of course, so let’s come back to the Camon 20 Premier.

It is one of 4 devices Tecno recently launched. There’s the regular Camon 20, the Camon 20 Pro 4G, and the 20 Pro 5G which is probably the best value for money for any device under 200k as it comes with the exact same processor as the Premier and looks mostly the same, but costs about 100K less.

Unboxing

Tecno remains one of the very few, if not the only manufacturer that still adds complete accessories to their smartphones. The Camon 20 Premier gets a 45w fast charger and a pair of USB C earphones. Yea, the headphone jack is absent from the Camon 20 Premier.

There’s a fine protective casing that comes in the box. One that will protect it quite well, but for me, it covers that beautiful rear design so I won’t be using it that much. If like me you want to use it without a case though, there’s no guarantee that the leather won’t scratch if you’re not careful enough.

Design & Build Quality

The Camon 20 Premier is easily one of the best-designed midrange phones, and it has that premium look and feel. The leather finish on the rear Tecno calls magic skin. It has a nice pattern that actually compliments the peculiar shape of that camera platform. The bump is made of ceramic material. You’ll also notice the ring-light-shaped flash.

You really don’t have to go glass on the rear to have a premium-built device. A leather finish does not only look really classy but is also more durable as it won’t break. There are only two color options for the Camon 20 Premier. Dark Welkin and Serenity Blue. All I see is black and sky blue.

This leather finish is actually not exclusive to the Premiere as you also get it on more the affordable Camon 20 Pro and I think the regular versions too. There’s actually a special edition version coming soon. If you remember with the Camon 19 Pro we got a Mondrian Edition that reacted to UV light and changed color when exposed to sunlight.

There’s a Mr Doodle edition expected for the Camon 20 series and I’m curious to see what surprise Tecno has with that one. Maybe we’ll be able to doodle on it as the name suggests. There’s no confirmation on when that will be available but hopefully, I can get one when it is.

The Camon 20 Premier is flat on the frame and can be placed upright without support. The frame has a glossy finish. Tecno has leveled up on build quality by adding an IP53 rating.

While not water resistance on Samsung’s level, this pretty much equals the rest of the competition. This does not mean you should take it swimming though. It’s only rated for dust and splash, so it should survive accidental drops in water as long as it’s retrieved early enough.

We also now get the stereo speakers we’ve been asking for, with the second speaker grill at the top frame. Though not as loud as the bottom one, it makes for good stereo quality. The premium design on the Camon 20 Premier extends to the display as we have really slim bezels, almost symmetrical.

It employs an optical fingerprint scanner for security and I find that it works fine and is responsive as long as you touch the sensor right.

Display

Its display is 6.67 inches AMOLED with a 120hz screen refresh rate. From the display settings, the refresh rate is set to adaptive so it can automatically switch between 60, 90, or 120hz as the device requires, and I’ve actually found it to do a good job switching between these refresh rates and giving you a smooth user experience.

Normally I would set it to 120hz always, but for this device, I’ve left it to auto-switch and never needed to worry. The display quality is great but if you feel it’s not vibrant enough, you can choose to adjust or enhance its colors from the display settings. Tecno adds a front-facing flashlight on the display, useful if for any reason you want to take those nighttime selfies I mentioned how smooth this device is and that’s not an exaggeration.

The experience is solid and really close to that on the V Fold. You could say it’s mostly the work of such a powerful processor, but I think it still has a lot to do with the improvements to HiOS 13. The animations feel really smooth and snappy when it needs to be.

Multi Tasking & UI

The multitasking features are well implemented too, allowing you to use the smart panel to drag and drop apps into a split-screen or popup view. We also get some material u integrated here.

Not perfect but it works very well the only inconsistency you might find is with icon theming as you would need to toggle it to take effect each time you change the wallpaper, and the icons don’t switch when you go from light to dark mode or vise versa unless you re-toggle.

But I’ll take that over having no material u integration. It gives their software a whole new visual experience and I can have setups like this without needing to install 3rd party apps for customization. You can find the icon theming and dynamic color settings under the special function and then accessibility. HiOS will still typically be HiOS at this price point.

Unlike the V Fold which had almost no bloatware, this one comes with a few. The good though is that they’re not as aggressive, the regular culprits like Phoenix are not sending me unsolicited notifications. So far, only Palmstore can be ended by just turning off its notifications. There’s also this persistent NFC notification that doesn’t go away unless I disable NFC.

Internal Storage & RAM

The Camon 20 Premier is likely the only phone you’ll find with as much as 512GB of storage for its price. The competition offers no more than 256GB at this price point. With the Galaxy A54 for example, even the 256GB version will cost you upwards of 300k. For RAM, it comes with 8GB.

There’s no SD card slot, but do you really need it for a device that comes with 512GB of storage? I think not.

Processor

My favorite feature of the Camon 20 Premier is the processor, the Dimensity 8050. From all indications, it looks like a rebrand of the Dimensity 1300 or 1200 whichever you choose.

Benchmark Scores

Benchmark scores affirm its potential as it scores well over 600k on Antutu and with solid single and multi-core scores on Geekbench. Aside from the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 on the Poco F5 which is not available in this region, I doubt there’s any processor that beats it for the price.

Performance

Everything works smoothly, and with gaming, there are no disappointments. It barely heats up uncomfortably and that could be due to its dual liquid cooling system. Definitely, every device gets hot when you push it to the limits, but so far, nothing abnormal here and it’s nice to see that it maintains a warm temperature even when gaming for long.

Gaming & Haptics

It plays PUBG at HDR graphics and can go as high as Ultra frame rate. With Call of Duty mobile, you can get Very High Graphics settings and Max frame rate. I found gaming here enjoyable with no frame drops. Of course, I’ve not pushed it as much as a mobile gamer would but from the little I’ve done, it’s looking good.

The haptic feedback here is also solid. This is one area Tecno devices have previously not excelled and it’s nice to see that they’ve done a good job to improve it significantly.

Battery Life & Charging

The battery capacity of the Camon 20 Premier is 5000mAh and it will have no issues taking you through a day of use on a full charge. I’ve not experienced any abnormal battery drain, and I’d say it has amazing standby time.

It supports 45w fast charging and will take just about an hour to charge from 0 to 100.

Camera Specs

When you look at Tecno’s Camon series, the cameras are a major selling point as they tend to pack it up spec-wise.

This time we’re getting a 50MP Camera with Sensor-Shift stabilization and Laser autofocus, similar to the technology used on the iPhone.

There’s a 108MP Ultra-wide camera and I’m like… Who needs 108MP for an Ultra-wide camera, but you’ll be surprised at what it can actually do? There’s a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, we get a 32MP camera. That’s quite the camera specifications for a mid-ranger. I found it to take really good photos with a decent level of color accuracy.

On human subjects, skin tones are great, and so is HDR processing. I noticed though that the color profile when shooting portraits appears different from non-portrait shots. Also, the 108MP Ultra-wide camera seems to have more vibrance with colors compared to the main camera.

Its night mode shots are also quite good, it handles processing the dark areas well while keeping the photos sharp. For selfies, you might want to turn off default beauty filters for sharper results.

I think the results are great on both portrait and non-portrait shots, even in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. It also processes HDR well. A selling point for the cameras is their sensor-shift stabilization and laser autofocus.

Video Recording

The stabilization is not quite there on 4K but solid on 1080p recording. It can shoot selfie videos up to 2K 30 fps, it also gets HDR video mode which attempts to give better HDR quality while recording videos.

FAQ

Is Camon 20 Premier Water Resistant?

The Tecno Camon 20 Premier is not water resistant. It does not have an IP rating, which means it is not protected against dust or water.

What Do I Do When My Tecno Phone Falls In Water?

Here are some things you can do if your Tecno phone falls into the water:

✔️Remove the phone from the water as quickly as possible: The longer the phone is in the water, the more damage it will suffer.

✔️Turn off the phone.
Do not try to turn it on again until it has been thoroughly dried.
Remove the SIM card, memory card, and battery. This will help to prevent water damage to these components.

✔️Dry the phone with a clean, soft cloth. You can also use a hair dryer in a cool setting to help speed up the drying process.

If you follow these steps, you may be able to save your Tecno phone from water damage. However, if the phone is not working after you have dried it out, you may need to take it to a repair technician.

Verdict

Adding an IP53 rating is a nice improvement and one less thing to nitpick. The overall features of the Camon 20 Premier make[ it highly recommendable. Not to forget the software improvements with HiOS too, though it’s still getting there, cos it still needs some decluttering. The Camon 20 Premier will give you probably the best gaming performance you can get at its price.
